OK everyone, be proud of me now!
So I was at the post office shipping out some packages when something caught my eye. Yes, being Christmas time, Canada Post is starting to offer up their annual hockey paraphernalia. Sitting there, on the counter was a display of shiney new collector coins. And the Leafs coin was front and center. Now I'm thinking, "man, I gotta get me one of these". I even picked it up and examined it. It was a nice coin, Canada quarter with the Hockey Fights Cancer thing where the jersey is shaped like a heart. Then I see the price. 25 bucks for a quarter. You see, a year ago, I would've been like "OK, I'll take it". But the new me is realizing I got bills to pay, so I put it back.
Now, you can be a little less proud of me.
November also means another thing in Canada. McDONALD'S HOCKEY CARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yup, every fall I promise myself that after a summer of eating crappy fast food, I'm gonna give it up. Well, that usualy lasts about a month before those damn cards come out, and I'm back in line for some artery-clogging meat-like burgers and some 99 cent hockey cards.
On a pack-break note, I bought 5 packs of Ultra today, just because. The set looks pretty good, but since set building leaves me with a pile of unwanted base, this does little good. But I did get a Darryl Boyce RC, for my Leafs RC set.

Cheap shots, rivalries, and a few new goodies.
OK, now I'm pissed.
During Saturday's great game vs. Montreal, Mike Van Ryn was brutally cheap shotted (is that even a word?) from behind by Tom Kostopoulus. The hit resulted in a 3-game suspension. Why am I mad? Well, while Konstopouls sits out for three games, Van Ryn misses at least a month with a broken nose, concussion AND broken hand. So Konstopoulus gets the proverbial slap on the wrist. Here's what I think. If a player turns and motion keeps the other player from stopping to make the hit, call it a penalty, it's accidental, but it shouldn't happen. If the player INTENTIONALLY hits a player from behind into the boards, the standard 1-game suspension with the length going up by an additional game per repeat infraction should stay in place. But, if a player is coming in, with his eyes on the player's BACK instead of the puck, raises his hands and RAMS his opponent into the boards, resulting in an injury, that's intent to injure and should be dealt with more severely. This is gonna keep hapening if the league doesn't crack down on it, and these three-game slaps on the wrist aren't doing the job.
My opinion? If you INTENTIONALLY ram a player into the boards and hurt him, your suspension shouldlast as long as the injury. Plain and simple.
Now, I can already hear the russtle of the Habs fans. "What about Grabovsky's cheap shot? You only care because it's your team!" Not true, I think what Grabovski did was cheap, it is spearing, and he should've gotten a penalty for it. BUT saying it's the same thing is a long shot considering Carey Price was able make a perfectly fine save pretty much as it was happening, and Van Ryn couldn't even get up.
I was also right there ready to burn Ryan Hollweg at the steak after his little third straight boarding call at the beginning of the season. There's no place for that stuff in hockey from any player, on any team.
Now, on to a happier subject shall we? Watching this game did bring back memories of the old Leafs rivalries. Sure, I wasn't around to see the Toronto / Montreal Cup finals of the 50s and 60s, but I did see some heated games, and some great rivalries over the years. So, in the wake of LOVECROSBY87's rivalry blog on nhl.com (http://fans.nhl.com/members/lovecrosby87/blogs/23633), I'm gonna do a little 10 best of my own favorite Leafs rivalries. Look for that in my next blog.
On the collecting front, my mailbox has been looking pretty weak lately. Last week only saw me add two rookies to my Leafs PC, but with a little old-school flavour with Mike Palmateer and Ken Wregget RCs. This week started off a little better, with 1 package featuring 3 new Leafs RCs (Wozniewski Black Diamond, Bell Mini Jersey, Newbury Hot Prospects) and a couple traders.

Setting the Game of Hockey Back 40 Years... All in the Name of Charity
You know, for a town that's produced players like Ed Shack, Ron Duguay, Randy Carlyle, Mike Foligno, Ed Giacomin, Todd Bertuzzi and future star Nik Foligno, we tend to not get alot of big-time games in Sudbury.
So when I heard the Hanson Brothers were coming to town for a charity hockey game, I was all in. The Hansons along with Yvon Barrette, aka Denis Lemieux, lead a Cheifs tam made up of local celebreties to take on some Sudbury Wolves alumni led by Troy Malette and Troy Crowder.
The game started off with a bang, and the Hansons gave us their personal twist on the ceremonial face-off, which earned them each 2 minutes before the game even started.
The game itself got off to a shaky start, as Barette went down into the splits to make a save, but didn't get up. At first everyone thought it was all part of the show, and the ref was actually about to start the game up. He had to be carried off the ice, holding his hamstring.
After a few minutes, the show continued, and it was just that, a show.
The game itself was kinda like being in the stands at a men's league shimmy game, but it was obvious from the get-go that this was more about the Hansons than hockey.
Goalies were slashed, players were triple-teamed, linesmen were abused, and the Hansons kept up the antics that made them famous. They even used penalty box time to sneak out and chat with fans.
Among the penalties handed out were refing-roughing and Troy Crowder got 2 for defending himself.
One alumni player got 2 for tripping, 5 for making Steve Hanson fall, and the Hansons were giving a penalty shot, which they all took together.
The second period ended with an own-goal that tied the game, resulting in the Chie's goalie scrapping it out with the Hansons. Penalties assessed to the Hansons were 2 minutes for roughing, 5 for fighting, 5 for an elbow-drop and a game misconduct for setting the game of hockey back 40 years.
Of course having the Hansons out during the third really let the game pick up, and allowed the
guests of honor to sign autographs. I managed to scratch another item off my hockey dream list with this great 8x10
All in all, the night was entertaining and fun, meeting the Hansons was really cool and it was all for a good cause.

This Week in sullivan_fan's World...
Online trading community at its finest, NHL expansion, the KHL and a new outlet to funnel my hard-earned money into highlight this edition, so let's get to it.
When Online Trading Goes... Right
A little over a year ago, I got a private message on http://www.tradingcardcentral.com/ from a guy saying he had tons of Steve Sullivan cards for me, but he collected Leafs also. I had to give a few nice pieces from my PC to get these bad boys but it was worth it in the end. Once I got his address I found out he lived just a few hours down a patch of Northern Ontario highway called the 144. After some back and forth chatting, he told me of this other trade site where I might find more Sullies. Sure enough I did, and http://www.ultimatecardboard.com/ is where I now do the bulk of my hobby-ness. A few Leafs for Leafs trades down the road and I get a message one day. The jist of it was:
"If you need this, send me your address, it's yours"
The "this" in question was am 01-02 UD Young Guns Greg Andrusak for my Leafs RC project. Not a huge card but a very nice gesture all the same. Knowing I had to repay him, when an extra 05-06 UD Ice Glacial Graphs Matt Stajan came into my possesion, and it wasn't in his bucket, I knew where it was going. Sure enough, that wasn't the end of it. About a week later I open my mailbox to find a HUGE package which I thought was a book... then I recognized the address. In the package were the 96-97 Leafs Yearbook, 06-07 Leafs Yearbook, and two issues of Chill magazine, one with Eric Lindros, the other, Bob Cole. Oh yeah, AND a photosheet of Bower, Mahovlich, Keon and Horton HHoF pics.
This is what online trading communities like UCB and TTC are all about, commeraderie. We may compete for the better PC, but whenever possible, we help each other out.
NHL Considering Expansion?!?
So there's been some talk about ANOTHER expansion to the NHL, but why? Does the NHL really need more teams in say, Houston, Las Vegas and Kansas City while teams in Atlanta, Florida, Carolina and Nashville are struggling.
My opinion? Fix these prolems by taking the teams out of the cities that rather spend their money on football and Nascar (not that there's anything wrong with that) and bring them to cities that crave hockey. Cities that would pay to watch a game, recession or not, rather than those where only the rich take out their possible investors to "watch them there crazy canucks fight on the frozen water". Move these duds into true marketable hockey towns. Winnipeg, Hamilton, etc.
Speaking of Expansion...
On the expansion front, other talks have been regarding possible European expansion. Honestly, this is completely rediculous. Especially when you have a perfectly good potential partner over in Europe already. Have the two seperate leagues play out their regular season and then do a Challenge Cup, kinda like the current CHL Memorial Cup. Wouldn't that be a nice way for Gary Bettman to tap into the European market?
And Finally...
OK, so I've discovered a new way to expand my Leafs collection. Magazines. I've already gotten about 10 Leafs covers behind me, and today I was passing by the local used book store and had a brainstorm. Why not check there. While there were a few tempting choices, my 7$ budget only allowed me to pick up two titles. An old Scholastic book entitled "Hockey Superstars" with none other than Dougie himself on the cover, and the January 1984 issue of Hockey Illustrated, sporting Mike Palmateer. Pretty sweet...

Damn You Private Stock and Your Backwards Hobby/Retail Rules!!!!!!!!!
You hear that? It's rant time! Yay!
But seriously, I'm a little mad at Pacific (specifically the Private Stock brand) right now. The reason? Why on earth would you release two completely different sub-sets for Hobby and Retail release?!?!? Yeah yeah, I know Pacific is WAY out of the game right now, and my little crusade here will likely fall on deaf ears, or actually, no ears at all, but it's still nice to vent some times.
Before we go any further, I'd like to point out at this juncture that I'm not a money-hungry, pack feeling, only care about high BV collector. However, the BV of a card does play a factor in my everyday collecting habits. You see, as a collector of all thing Leafs and Steve Sullivan, ALOT of the stuff I chase books in the 5-10$ range. So, since I do more trading than buying/selling, if I were to pull a 50$ RC, this card can get me anywhere between 5-10 cards from my wants. And to me collecting is all about quantity, not quality. I want my collection to grow in numbers, heck, I'd be just as happy with 20 2$ BAP Autos of Darby Hendrickson and Aki Berg as I would with one 40$ Doug Gilmour GU. And besides, anything in Blue and White is quality baby!
Now where was I? Oh yeah, my beef with Private Stock. This little ditty starts out with one of my usual trips to the Dollar Store. . .
I decided to buy myself 10 packs of 2002-03 Private Stock Titanium. As I got into my car to open them up, I was thrilled to pull A) a Jay Bouwmeester RC! and B) a Jason Spezza Blue RC! among the no-namers and inserts. Once I got home I checked my Beckett and noticed BAM! The Bouwmeester books at 40$ and the Spezza books at 225$!!!!! Then I read a little further down the column. You see, these values where for the HOBBY versions #'d to 99, and what I had was a RETAIL Bouwmeester /1475 and a BLUE Spezza /450. Both of these were valued at .15X Hobby. Bummer. So now my Bouwmeester books at 6$ and the Spezza at about 35$, which of course, is still a great pull from a 2$ pack.
But I shouldn't have been too surprised by this. You see, I've been fooled by Private Stock before. On a prior Dollar Store binge, I pulled a Zetterberg (150$) and Nash (250$). In the middle of my happy dance, which by the way is pretty impressive if you ask me, but you're not, so I digress, I noticed the serial # was off. these weren't the /99 Hobby versions but the /1550 Retail.
Now I get that Retail is meant to attract newcomers to the hobby, so the pulls are less than stellar. And I know that I should've bought Hobby packs if I wanted big pulls. BUT, I am a broke college student (hence the Dollar Store shopping).
In the end, I guess its tomfoolery like this that companies like Pacific aren't in the hockey card biz anymore (that or, the way they saturated the market with product). So like I said, this was kind of a pointless rant. But like I also said, sometimes, it's just nice to vent.

Problems in the hobby today.
It's always talked about, how our beloved hobby is becoming more of a business than a hobby. Everyday, all over the trade boards you hear of someone ready to quit because people only seem to care about BVs and premiums.
It's only cardboard!
Yes, pack searchers, gougers, low-ballers, basically everyone only interested in the hobby to make a buck are everywhere. I read all the horror stories, but yesterday I saw it first hand.
I was out of town and stopped in at a hobby store I always go to in this town. I guy came in as I was looking at stuff and he asked for a box of UD Black, dropping 200 bucks like it was nothing. He opens his packs and pulls a Kessel on-patch auto, a couple either decent ones, and an Alex Ovechkin quad jersey auto! I'm watching this trying not to drool. His response? This is all crap, give me another one (note: I toned down the language a bit, the actual adjective used sounded a little like ducking pit). YOU JUST PULLED AN OVECHKIN QUAD JERSEY AUTO AND COULDN'T CARE LESS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
So then the owner hands him over a second box, and out of this one he pulls an Alex Foster letterman RC, a Robbie Earle AUTO letterman patch RC, AND a Sundin/Steen dual JSY. His reaction? You guessed it, more ducking pits.
As the guy left, I'm dumbfounded by the fact that the guy dropped 400 bucks, pulled some sick cards, and couldn't care less about it. I asked the owner if he was serious about that and his response was this:
"Yes and no, the guy has money to burn and buys stuff like this all the time, if it's not worth 1-2 grand, he's not happy."
That, is what's wrong with our hobby.

Sometimes you can get great pulls in the most unlikely places.
So those of you who know me from the boards I frequent, know that I'm a big fan of the "alternatives" when it comes to hockey cards. Being in a town where the only two small hobby shops (both having limited selection when it comes to boxes) are a half hour drive away, I tend to seek out other ways to get my fix. What you also know if you know me from the boards, is that I seem to have pretty good luck in these places. Here's a few of them, along with some of my more memorable pulls.
GAS STATION:
Once the lock-out ended, and the hobby started gaining momentum again, the local gas stations started carrying hockey cards. So since then, I've been picking up a few packs along with my fill-up. Some of my more noteable pulls have been:
05-06 UD Crosby RC
06-07 UD Malkin RC
07-08 UD Carey Price RC
On top of these, I've also pulled countless RCs, many game-used and more inserts than I know what to do with.
DOLLAR STORE:
In Canada, we have a chain of bargain stores called A Buck Or Two, and they often carry various products from various years, mainly 03-04 Pacific products. These are usually a steal, mostly at 2 bucks a pack, and you often get some decent stuff (at least, if you get there before the pack feelers). Here's what I've gotten over the years:
03-04 Parkhurst Original 6 NY Ed Giacomin Auto
03-04 Parkhurst Original 6 NY Phil Esposito GU
03-04 Pacific Vincent Lecavalier Auto
02-03 PS Reserve Rick Nash RC
02-03 PS Reserve Henrik Zetterberg RC
Aside from cards, the dollar store also has other hockey stuff. I've been able to add to my Maple Leafs collection including bobbleheads, pucks, die casts, and mini jerseys.
THRIFT STORE:
OK, so cards aren't usually found here, but the local thrift store is often a great place to find Jerseys, pucks, toys, and other hockey-related items.

Allow myself to introduce... myself...
Hey, I'm Al! I'm 23 from Sudbury, ON and this is my hobby blog.
Well, now that that's over with, let's talk about my little blog here. Being a hockey fan, pretty much all of my collecting habits revolve around hockey. I collect different types of cards at different times, but I'm always looking for these:
Steve Sullivan
Jeremy Williams
Toronto Maple Leafs
I do a whole bunch of online trading, and can be found on www.ultimatecardboard.com, www.hobbyinsider.net, and www.sportscardforum.com. On all three sites, my user name is sullivan_fan.
Anyways, this blog will be my way of talking about my favorite hobby, I'll talk about my sweet pulls, my latest maildays, my thrift store/ yard sale/ dollar store steals, as well as any beefs I might have with Upper Deck, Beckett.com, and the likes. I'll also throw in a few random blogs about the Leafs and NHL in general, as well as some tidbits regarding my Through The Mail (TTM) autograph campaign.
So I hope you enjoy, and don't be afraid to let me know what you think.
